2021 Survey of private aid organizations affected by the spread of COVID-19
May 24, 2022
To understand how private organizations involved in suicide prevention/providing support to those bereaved by suicide have been affected by the pandemic, between February and March 2022, the Japan Suicide Countermeasures Promotion Center (JSCP) conducted the “2021 Survey of private aid organizations affected by the spread of COVID-19.”
This is the second time the survey has been conducted since the “Survey of private aid organizations affected by the spread of COVID-19” held at start of the pandemic in April 2020, and this survey investigated what changes had taken place in the interim.
Survey outline
Period | February-March 2022 |
Method | Online or paper questionnaire |
Audience | Private organizations involved in suicide prevention, or providing support to those bereaved by suicide (E.g. organizations on the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s Expert panel for the promotion of suicide countermeasure policies, or members of the Suicide Prevention National Network) |
Respondents | 45 organizations (in the previous survey, 55 organizations responded) |
Around half of respondents are still forced to “restrict activities”
When asked about restrictions of their activities, around half of the organizations responded that they were still forced to restrict their endeavours, which is a decrease from the previous survey of 83.6% of respondents.
The main reasons for this were “holding events with large gatherings of people and face-to-face meetings mean infection prevention is extremely difficult” (72.4%), and “as it is unclear how long the COVID-19 pandemic will last, it’s very difficult to make future plans” (41.4%).
As we see a continuation in the restriction of the endeavours of private organisations, in order to connect related organizations and respond to the elevated risk of suicide, JSCP will continue to serve as a hub for relevant stakeholders within the field of suicide countermeasures and provide comprehensive support.
